Legislative Houses
The Wisconsin Legislature is a bicameral body consisting of two houses that jointly exercise the legislative power of the state.

Key Administrative Roles

  • Leadership: Officers of the Legislature responsible for its operation and management of each political caucus.

  • Chief Clerk: The officer elected by a house of the Legislature to perform and direct the clerical and personnel functions of that house.

  • Sergeant-at-Arms: The officer elected by the members of one house of the Legislature to perform and direct the police and custodial functions of that house.

A legislative committee meeting during which the committee gathers information about proposals under consideration by the committee or other topics related to the committee’s assigned issue areas. Public testimony is generally accepted at hearings.
